This Week's News

  • Cluster Concert Start Time Changed!  The Cluster Concert was supposed to begin at 6:30 PM, but has been pushed to 7:00 PM.  Hillwood Band members have a cal time of 5:00 PM.  The gig sheet is available on the Hillwood Band website and can be found here.
  • General Band Booster Meeting, March 2nd at 6:00pm in Auditorium. This meeting is mandatory for everyone who is going on the Chicago Trip.  We will go over specific items relating to the trip and a representative from Thomas Tours will be there to answer any questions that you might have. It is very important that you attend this meeting. Information has been sent home by way of students regarding the Emergency/Medical form and the dinner selection for Ed's. If these two items have not been returned to Gail Reeder by March 2nd then they must be returned at this meeting.
  • Taking nominations for the 2010/2011 Band Booster Board.  The present Band Booster Board is now taking nominations for the 2010/2011 board. Please email Mr. Chester (Michael.chester@mnps.org) your preference for the following positions.  Nominations need to be submitted by March 2nd.

    Elected Officers of the HHSBB shall consist of the following voting eight (8) offices and one (1) non-voting office:

    A. President
    B. Vice President of Ways and Means (Fund Raisers)
    C. Vice President of Media and Community Relations (newsletter, etc)
    D. Vice President of Transportation and Logistics (truck, equipment, etc)
    E. Vice President of Uniform Maintenance (marching/concert fittings, etc)
    F. Vice President of Student Services (Chaperones, etc)
    G. Secretary
    H. Treasurer
    I. Parliamentarian (non-voting member)

    Any officer position can have co-officers (i.e. co-presidents, co-vice presidents, etc.) that share one position. Co-officers will have one vote as one office only and not two separate independent votes.

  • Now Accepted: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX, and PayPal. Band fees can now be paid by using a variety of methods through PayPal. Don't forget donations! We have a place for that now, too. Visit the HHS Band website at http://www.hillwoodband.com/ to see (and use) them.

  • TONIGHT'S MEETING CANCELED! The main purpose of tonight's band meeting was to collect the remaining money due, and to complete the Emergency Medical and Release Form. This is a requirement of Thomas Tours' insurance and everyone who is going on the Chicago Trip must complete one. Therefore in light that tonight's meeting is cancelled due to snow (once again), Gail Reeder will be sending home the forms with the students once school reconvenes. She will then get them notarized.

    When you received your statement last week, you also had a letter stating the money you owed for the trip and the remaining band fees. If you didn't get a letter, then you owe nothing. The letter indicated the correct amount and not the $175.00 that was stated in the newsletter. Please mail, send with student or bring by the school your remaining Chicago amount. We have to pay Thomas Tours by this Friday. Gail Reeder is at the school even though school is closed but call before coming 259-2025 x2307. Thank you for your patience and understanding for canceling again the meeting. Mother nature is not cooperating!
  • Spring Band Calendar Ready. The spring calendar is ready and can be found on the band's website, or downloaded directly here .  If your band member has a conflict, please send word to Mr. Chester as soon as possible by using the Calendar Conflict form available on our website, or can be downloaded directly here.
  • 2010 Wind Ensemble Supply List Now Available. Please review the supply list and gather items for your band member. The first supply check will be February 16, 2010. The supply list can be accessed here.
  • Final Chicago Trip Payment Due February 1.  Don't forget to make your final installment payable to the Hillwood Band Boosters.  You may drop your payment off in the lock box in the band room (please place payment in a sealed envelope with name) or mail the payment to the post office box (P.O. Box 58405, Nashville, TN  37205).

    If you would like to use PayPal to make your payment, please pay $103.30 to get $100 credited to your account. (Remember PayPal charges 2.9 % plus $0.30 per transaction.)
  • Final Band Fees Due January 15 and February 15.  If you haven't done so already, final installments of this year's band fees are coming up and should be payable to the Hillwood Band Boosters.  You may drop your payment off in the lock box in the band room (please place payment in a sealed envelope with name) or mail the payment to the post office box (P.O. Box 58405, Nashville, TN  37205).

    If you would like to use PayPal to make your payment, please pay $103.30 to get $100 credited to your account. (Remember PayPal charges 2.9 % plus $0.30 per transaction.)

  • Midstate Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Concerts held in January in Murfreesboro. Select members the Hillwood High School High School Band performed in a series of Midstate Band concerts on Saturday, January 23, 2010. These members include Scott Franco, Rachel Smith, Tatyana Bristol, Chelsey Miles, Shelby Rosenburg, David Smith, and Jonathan Davies. Congratulations to all our Midstate Band members!

    Midstate Orchestra and Jazz concerts were held Saturday, January 16 in Murfreesboro. Scott Franco represented Hillwood in the Midstate High School Orchestra, and Nathan Daniel (8th grader) represented Bellevue Middle School in the Midstate Jr. High Jazz Band. Congratulations to these to individuals on a great accomplishment!
  • Spring Band Calendar Ready.   • Band Account Statements Out Soon. Our new treasurer is getting up to speed quickly and should have band statements soon.

Dear Friends and Family of the Hillwood High School Band Program,

 

I hope this newsletter finds you in good spirits as we turn our focus now towards the many performance opportunities that the Hillwood Band will take part in.  Our calendar has been set and the students have all been given copies.  Additional copies of the calendar as well as upcoming dates can always be found on our website or Facebook page.

 

Speaking of the calendar, we have a new plan in place for those who may have conflicts with future dates on the calendar.  From time to time conflicts arise such as doctor's appointments, dental appointments, etc.  Many of you have always been good about scheduling around our rehearsal and events.  I understand from time to time conflicts may be unavoidable.  For that reason I ask that the students, or you as parents, fill out and return a conflict notification form if should happen to see events that might pose a problem (all performances and after school rehearsals).  Sometimes parents may know better than their child might when it comes to upcoming dates that might conflict with our calendar.  Simply fill out the form and you will receive notification from me via phone call or email.  Extra copies of this form will always be available in the rehearsal hall by the drop box on the wall, as well as on our website at http://m.b5z.net/i/u/6120075/f/2009-2010/Calendar_Conflict_Form.pdf.

 

We turn our attention to the upcoming Concert Performance Assessment that will occur the first week of March.  The schedule for this event has not yet been set but we do know it will be held at I.T. Creswell Middle Arts Magnet School here in Nashville.  Please rest assured that once I find out we will let you know.    The students in Wind Ensemble are working towards the first concert on February 23, 2010 where we will once again join Bellevue Middle School for the annual cluster concert.  Our after school rehearsal are already underway and the students are doing a great job at mastering the skills necessary for concert performance assessment.

 

In this edition of the newsletter, you will also find a supply list that your child needs for wind ensemble and concert band class.  (Please access it from our website at http://m.b5z.net/i/u/6120075/f/2009-2010/Wind_Ensemble_Band_Supply_List_2009-10.pdf.) Many of your children probably have most of these items already.  In case they do not, please take a look at the supply list.  Included for your convenience is vendor information as well address and telephone numbers.  Please go over this list with your child and find out what they have or what they need.  We will conduct our first materials check on February 16, 2010.  If for some reason you cannot locate an item or have questions/concerns please contact me.

 

Another upcoming event that we have in store for the students is our upcoming Symphonic Band Camp which will be held at Hillwood High School on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM.  During this camp members of the Wind Ensemble will work with staff members in group master class settings to refine their musical skills.  The final schedule of this camp will be released soon.  Please be on the lookout for this.  We always welcome parent involvement during these special events and we hope you will join us to see what your child is learning.
