Hello!

I don't have much to add this week. Just a reminder to check the band's website for updates and results, and the auxiliary Facebook page for quick announcements.

Yes, the band has a Facebook page!  You don't need a Facebook account to see the page, but you do need an account, and you need to "become a fan" if you want instant updates.  And pictures? There's a link to the pictures there!

Many, many thanks to all the parents who helped out at Columbia Saturday!

We will be providing our famous hospitality for the Stratford band, staff, and chaperones during the 3rd quarter.  Hillwood has become well known for its generous hospitality. This goes beyond providing snacks for the visiting band, it includes the presentation of the light snack buffet, the respect shown to the other band, and the cordial conversation during the break.

We will be serving cookies not used for last week's game, so nothing additional is needed.

Additional Comments

Hello!

Saturday will be a VERY long day.  Make sure your band student has plenty of snacks and money.  If you are attending, make sure you have enough money to pay for your entry to the contest.

For our new parents, uniform "halves" consist of the black bib pants, the Hillwood High School Band issued black under armor shirt, black socks (at least mid-calf), and black band marching shoes.  Jackets are left in the uniform bags and carried separately.

There are usually vendor kiosks at competitions where band members can purchase memorabilia.  It is not required to purchase these items, but we want to make sure you child has enough money for food.

Which reminds me . please, please, please send enough money for food and snacks, or send a lunch kit with your student.  We have has students in the past show up for all day events with nothing to eat or drink.  Of course we don't let them starve, but it does make other parents and band members uncomfortable.

Saturday will be full of activity.  If you are available to help, come on by.  Before and after we do have to load and unload the equipment truck, clean up after ourselves in the busses and school, and just put things away.  At the competition we'll have to unload and set out the equipment so that it is easy for the band members to get to their things.

As there is "concert etiquette" for concert performances in the Spring time, there is "marching band etiquette" during marching season.  This time is pretty regimented.  When your child is in line in full uniform, you should not approach them unless you are assisting with official band business.  When the band members are walking in line, you should not expect to be allowed to "break ranks."  (This means passing through while they are walking by.)

We have been working diligently on our Hillwood reputation for several years now and parents AND students are expected to act appropriately when representing the Hillwood High School Band.

Hope you can come see the kids compete at Columbia Saturday!

Cindy F

The Hillwood High School Band
Weekly News
September 15, 2009
This Week's News
  • Next General Band Booster Meeting TONIGHT. Tuesday, September 15 beginning at 6:00 PM. The location will depend on the availability of space that day. Please join us.

  • Friday Night: Football Game vs. McGavock.  Band members will be wearing FULL Dress Uniforms for the game. We will be providing our famous hospitality for the McGavock band, staff, and chaperones during the 3rd quarter.  Hillwood has become well known for its generous hospitality. This goes beyond providing snacks for the visiting band, it includes the presentation of the light snack buffet, the respect shown to the other band, and the cordial conversation during the break.

But this can't happen without a little help from our parents. We will have 165 guests Friday night plus 75 of our own band members and staff.  This year the Band Boosters will provide the plates and cups, so we only need help with the snacks.  We're asking for pre-packaged cookies, not cookies from the deli so we can keep the unopened packages for another night. This Friday, we need the following items:

Woodwinds & Percussion - assorted pre-packaged cookies (one package per student)
Brass & Color Guard - "finger" fruit (grapes and bananas work well; no apples or oranges, please)

  • Competition: HGI at Hendersonville Saturday, Sept. 19. The 22nd Annual Hendersonville Golden Invitational Marching Band Contest will be held THIS Saturday.  Our warm-up time is scheduled for 2:15 PM and performance time is 2:45 PM. There is usually a fee for parking and admission. Look for more information in the Weekly News Update later this week.

Please make sure your band member is dressed in his/her FIELD UNIFORM and ON THE FIELD no later than 8:00 AM Saturday morning.  This means band members may need to arrive by 7:30 AM to gather their things.  The rehearsal hall will open at 7:15 AM.

  • Note about PayPal.  PayPal charges us a service charge per transaction. When we started using PayPal last year, the Band Boosters voted to pass the charge on to the band student. (A nominal fee for the convenience.)  Since we didn't make a reminder announcement, the Band Boosters will cover charges incurred in July and August.  What does this mean exactly?

The fee is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you send. For example, if you send $100.00 USD by credit card, the fee would be $3.20 USD ($2.90 + $0.30). Your band account would be credited $96.80.

  • Now Accepted: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX, and PayPal. Band fees can now be paid by using a variety of methods through PayPal. Don't forget donations! We have a place for that now, too. Visit the HHS Band website at http://www.hillwoodband.com/ to see (and use) them.

This Week's News

  • Gig Sheets Out Today!  And it is attached. Band members will be wearing FULL Dress Uniforms for the game. This is an away game - make sure your band member has snack money and is wearing the appropriate undergarments.

  • Calling All Hands!  We need parents to sign up help move props during football games and competitions.  It takes all of us to make the band program successful!  See Gail Reeder for more information.  (gail.reeder@mnps.org)

  • Next General Band Booster Meeting Scheduled. It will be Tuesday, September 15 beginning at 6:00 PM. The location will depend on the availability of space that day.

  • Note about PayPal.  PayPal charges us a service charge per transaction. When we started using PayPal last year, the Band Boosters voted to pass the charge on to the band student. • Civic Bank and Trust: We have an opportunity to participate in a fundraiser Saturday September 12 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. It is a door to door campaign (LOTS of walking!) distributing door hangers in the area.  It comes out to $50 per person or $12.50 per hour.  Not bad!  There are SIX SPOTS available; email Andi DeJarnette (adejarnette@hotmail.com) to sign up.

  • Attendance Issues. We have had a rash of attendance problems lately. Please see the note under "Additional Comments" for more information and a copy of the attendance policy as stated in the contract signed by the parent/guardian and band member. We hope this is the only time we will need to remind our band member of the importance of good attendance.

  • Water Bottles and Field Uniforms.  Please make sure your child comes to after school band rehearsal with a water bottle and their field uniform.  We have a few students who are not bringing their needed materials or wearing the correct uniform.  This slight problem is now becoming a big concern.  Extra shirts and shorts can be purchased from the band office if needed.  Please explain the importance of hydration with your child.

  • Fundraising Opportunities:
    • Smart Cards (contact Ms. Andi DeJarnette at adejarnette@hotmail.com)
    •  City Book discount coupons (contact Ms. Andi DeJarnette at adejarnette@hotmail.com)
    • Kroger cards (contact Mrs. Jody Gregory)
    • Central Parking (email parking@hillwoodband.com)

We'd do anything for you kids, anything,

For you mean everything to us,

We know that

We'd go anywhere,

For your band, anywhere,

For your band, everywhere we'd see.

Would you climb a hill?

Anything!

For your band

Anything for you mean everything to us

We know that we'd go anywhere for your smile

Anywhere for your smile

Everywhere we'd see

Would you lace my shoe?
