This Week's News
- Thomas Tours will NOT be on campus Saturday afternoon. Look for information in the coming emails. They are tentatively scheduled to be at our August 11 Booster Meeting.

Greetings Parents!
We're still finalizing the calendar, so don't forget to check the "hold the dates" sheet we mailed/sent home with the students. Times for rehearsals and sectionals are still being set, but will begin the week of August 18.
So, I guess you'd like to see the pictures? Well, I updated the links on the website under "Booster Blog." I'm also including them here in case you missed them. They are in an unlisted on Picasa.
Dinner is being organized by sections this week. Friday (hotdogs, chips, fruit) Color Guard Saturday NO DINNER (We also have a few leftovers for those who would prefer something different, not to mention PBJ.)
The kids are sounding VERY good, you should be very proud of the hard work they've put in this week - it's paying off. If you come to pick up your student early, you'll be able to catch part of the sound. Our end-of-week show is still on schedule to be performed at 4:00 PM. We hope to see you there!
Have a good evening and hope to see you around soon!

Band Camp Recap:
What a busy week it's been already! We've been talking about getting a "day in band camp" out all week, and just haven't gotten around to it. BUT, as parents, we are so much further ahead in other ways. We appreciate your assistance in getting all the paperwork, and band camp fees, in when requested. This is the FIRST year that has happened and has made it easier to support the program and Mr. Chester.
As for band camp - it's off to a terrific start! The kids jumped right in and started learning the show. The music sounds fantastic. Don't be alarmed - it is very different from anything the kids have done in the past. This year we added games. Have you heard about them? The kids seem to be having a lot of fun during this time.
A typical day in band camp: 8:45 The rehearsal hall opens 9:00 Leadership team meets (this includes section leaders and field commandrers) 10:00 Band camp begins; students gather in the auditorium lobby 10:30 Cardio/Flexibility in the gym 11:00 Fundamentals 12:00 Lunch on campus (students bring their lunches) 12:30 Section rehearsals 2:30 Break 4:30 Team building exercises 5:00 Dinner (provided) 6:00 Learn drill 8:50 Closing announcements 9:00 Band camp ends 9:15 Band hall closes
This schedule will continue throughout the week, with the exception being Saturday. Camp will conclude with a performance for the parents and community. Look for more information about this later.
Would you like to see pictures of band camp? We have an unlisted Picasa account to share these pictures.
Dinner is being organized by sections this week. Thursday (pancakes, bacon, fruit) Front Ensemble Friday (hotdogs, chips, fruit) Color Guard (We also have a few leftovers for those who would prefer something different, not to mention PBJ.)
There is still plenty to do before marching season begins. Any help is welcome for any amount of time you can donate during the day or in the evenings. We need to work on props for the show, cleaning the concession stand to get it ready for football games, uniforms fitting and sewing, organizing, etc. If you can help, please come and someone should be there to point you in a direction. If you don't find another parent, check with a director.
For our new parents, Band Camp always ends with a performance, more of a "sneak preview" of the show. We hope you will be able to join us Saturday. (More information will follow.)
Have a good day and hope to see you around soon!

Commentary
From Mr. Chester
Dear Parents,
I'd like to take this opportunity to prepare you for band camp. It is imperative that band members report to rehearsals in appropriate uniforms with their instruments ready for rehearsal. This may mean that some members need to arrive 15-30 minutes prior to the start of rehearsal. The rehearsal hall will always be open in plenty of time for everyone to gather items necessary for rehearsal and move to the gathering area, ready to go.
Also, please check your email daily for changes to the schedule, etc.
Additional Comments
A word from your Booster President:
I want to remind you that the $300 of your $800 HHS Competitive Band fees is due Monday 27th no later than 10:00am. Also if you owe for the previous years that too is due unless you have met with Mr. Chester, Ms. Gregory, treasurer and me as a group to discuss your situation. We want every child to be allowed to participate in the competitive band program. This program is in no way connected with the marching band class offered at Hillwood during school hours. The HHS Competitive Band is an after school activity and runs on its own.
Please be sure that your child brings lunch and a water bottle. We cannot supply bottles this year but we certainly have water to fill theirs. Supper is provided which is divided among the sections. If you haven't been contacted, ask Monday morning. The woodwind section has Monday night and they have been notified by me. Other sections will be contacted soon and are as follows:
- Monday--Woodwinds: Chicken Nuggets, Chips & Veggies (carrots, celery), Homemade Ice Cream
- Tuesday--Brass: Spaghetti & fixings
- Wednesday--Front Ensemble: Cold Cuts & fixings
- Thursday--Battery Percussion: Pancakes, Bacon, Fruit
- Friday--Color Guard: Hot Dogs, Chips, Fruit
We look forward to a successful and fun week of band camp and a very successful and fantastic time at the competitions this fall. I hope to see you at sometime during camp. Come by and join in the fun and be there for your child. You won't believe how hard they work.
Thanks again for allowing your child to join in the fun! Great memories will be made and will last a lifetime.

The "Comfort Zone"
We all have ?comfort zones' that we just don't want to cross and in most cases we humans never do. Well this year I have stepped over one line of my zone to become the president of the HHS Band Boosters. This is definitely not my area but at the time I just felt that it was the right thing to do. Hopefully by next May you will feel the same.
My other line is the discussion of politics, religion and money matters. Well I must cross another line and bring up the discussion of Money. I don't like this subject but it is one that needs to be addressed so please bear with me.
The Hillwood Band program gets nothing from the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System. We do receive grant money for instruments but this is only when Mr. Chester writes the grant. He does this as often as possible but then we must wait for the grant to be awarded to us. Since there is not a business or organization out in the world that can operate without money, we divide our annual operating band budget among each member. This practice is the only fair and right thing to do since each member carries equal weight during each football game performance and weekend contest.
For the 2009/2010 competitive band season, camp begins July 27 and your first payment of $300 is due that morning at registration. We have to have that amount in order to pay the instructors and cover other expenses like music, show drill, the design, supplies and building the props. Now in order to pay the remaining $500 you can fund raise by getting or doing the following:
1. Buy a Kroger Card for $5 from us and use it to receive 4% of everything you purchase from groceries, gas and even in the pharmacy. Every time you go to Kroger reload the card with additional money. I have used to same card for two years.
2. We will be distributing the Smart Cards during band camp. For every card sold you receive $7 so if you sold 10 you just earned $70! How easy is that?
3. Working Central Parking is another way to fund raise. Go to the band's website (http://hillwoodband.com), look under Fundraising Opportunities and click on the email address. Send an email stating you want to sign up to work and a working calendar will be sent to you with instructions on what to do. The hardest part of working CP is getting in your car and driving to either LP Field or Lot 77 behind the Sommet Center. You earn $8.50 per hour and you work anywhere from 4 hours to 6 hours depending on the event. So for 4 hours of work each person earns $34.00! Anyone can work but please be aware that students 17 to 15 years of age must work with an adult.
4. Fruit Sales in October and November for November and December delivery. This again is easy. Obtain orders from family, friends, church members, neighbors. The fruit is juicy, sweet and good for you!
5. Christmas Trees collections. We collect trees during the three Saturdays following Christmas. Bring a trailer if you have one but not necessary. We meet at Hillwood, divide into groups, get our area assigned with maps and go collecting.
As you can see there is really no reason for not having your student's fair share paid for. Better yet that one check could be the only check you ever write because the money you raise carries over year after year. The more money you raise by taking advantage of these fund raisers the less you pay out of pocket. It only takes some time and effort on you and your student plus you will be spending quality time together and in this day and time that is equally hard to do.
We look forward working with you to make this season of competitive band successful.

President, Hillwood High School Band Boosters
