Commentary
From Mr. Chester
Dear Band Families:
This weekend marks the ending of another successful competitive marching season. I cannot fully express the gratitude I have for all the parents who made this season possible, as well as for our new parents who jumped in to help without thinking twice.
The band members did a great job navigating through the many obstacles they faced throughout the season. The rain, though welcome, kept the band from being able to learn their dots in a timely manner and their uniforms from staying clean. There were hydration issues and minor injuries, but the band kept moving forward.
Despite challenges, there were good points as well. The weather was mild and kept the band members from having to "layer up" to practice in the freezing (literally) cold or hydrate every 15 minutes because it was too hot. Trophies were added the band's already large collection - so large we had to add another shelf to hold them all!
The band as a whole is young and has much to learn, but the young ones are off to a good start while the older band members can look back on a successful four years as members of the Hillwood High School Band.
On a final note, I would like to invite the families to watch at least one of the final two performances Saturday in support of the band and see the rewards of all those practices. (Directions to both competitions are included in the gig sheet.)
Though this may seem premature, I certainly believe we will have a successful day Saturday if we continue to work hard the next two days. Thank you all for your support and assistance and I look forward to seeing many you soon.
Warmest Regards, Michael Chester Music Director and Conductor The Hillwood High School Band
Saturday Information: The rehearsal hall doors will open at 7:15 AM. Students should be dressed in FIELD UNIFORMS and have instruments cleaned and ready to go. At 8:30 AM students should be "arched up" ready for the downbeat. We'll need plenty of extra hands available by 10:15 AM to help the band members load the truck. Students need to have a lunch packed - between contests, they will be given plenty of time to rest, hydrate, and eat.. We should arrive back to Hillwood High School around 9:45 PM. ALL BAND MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO UNLOAD AND CLEAN BEFORE THEY ARE DISMISSED. We'll try to make this happen quickly, but we can always use additional parents help. Estimated Timeline for Saturday below. (Please see Gig Sheet for full schedule.) 7:15 AM - Band rehearsal hall doors open 8:30 AM - Call Time - Athletic Field for rehearsal IN HALVES 10:15 AM - Load truck 1:30 PM - Band Performance #1 time
6:00 PM - Band Performance #2 time 7:30 PM - Awards begin 9:45 PM - Arrival at Hillwood High School

From Philip Perry (Colin's Dad) letting everyone know about a bit of fun:
Saturday Oct. 17, the band has been has been offered a great discount at the new "Haunted Nashville" which is three haunts under one roof! If we can all get together and go as one group of 30 or more, they will give us $5.00 off of the triple pass, which would be $18.00 total for all three! Those of you who know, one haunt is generally $12.00, so this is a great deal. Instead of the usual eat and skating, I thought this would be fun for all including PARENTS. I would like for everyone to meet around 6pm at Cancun in Bellevue or next door at The Snappy Tomato or if you're not eating just in the parking lot by 7:30pm and leave from there. Also, sadly, Thunderbird Castle will not open this year, instead on Saturday Oct. 31, the Skate center and I are having a costume contest with a $200.00 first prize! Doors open at 7pm. Parents are welcome as well. Hope to see everyone there. Thanks- FLIP

This Week's News
- Football Game vs. Hunter's Lane CHANGED. The football game scheduled for Friday night has been rescheduled for tonight. Hunter's Lane requested the change due to the chance of rain on their Homecoming night. Because of the late notice, the band WILL NOT be traveling to Hunter's Lane and will continue with regular practice instead.
PRACTICE WILL BE HELD FRIDAY 10/09 FROM 3:30 PM TO 5:00 PM.
- Competition at Forrest HS Saturday, Oct 10. Students will need to be on the field, ready to go by 8:00 AM Saturday morning for a brief rehearsal. The band will depart for Forrest around noon, but time will be provided for students to eat lunch. Parents, please make sure your band member has something to eat for lunch and money (or a packed meal) for dinner. Students should bring their casual uniforms to wear after the performance.
In the past, band members have walked across the street to the Mexican restaurant for dinner. The street is a busy highway. Due to safety concerns, the Booster Board of Directors has decided that students should not be allowed to go to the restaurant unless they are accompanied by THEIR parent. However, band members can ask another parent to bring back a "to go" meal for them.

This Week's News
- FRIENDLY REMINDER: Anytime band members are in uniform representing the school, ladies should refrain from wearing makeup. The only ladies allowed to wear makeup are those in the Color Guard. Gentlemen should be clean-shaven. All jewelry is also prohibited. DO NOT WEAR LONG-SLEEVED UNDER ARMOR SHIRTS UNLESS THERE IS AN ANNOUNCED CHANGE IN UNIFORM. Thanks!
- Football Game vs. Antioch Friday. Call time is 3:30 PM dressed in Field Uniform ready for a brief rehearsal. NO inspection. No hospitality. Make sure you band member has something to eat before call time or has money for the 3rd quarter break.
- Competition at Overton Saturday, Oct 3. The gig sheet is attached; abbreviated information is below.
This contest is a prelims/finals format. This means that there is a slight chance (5%) that the band would be selected to perform again in the evening show. However statistically speaking because they only take the 10 highest scoring bands into finals this means because we are the 3rd band of the day that our chances would be mathematically impossible for us to land a spot in the night show. If for some reason however we were to get a spot we would make the necessary arrangements to stay and perform. Student would be asked to notify family immediately in such a case.
- Next Band "Fair Share" Payment Due Oct 15. Don't forget to make your next installment payable to the Hillwood Band Boosters.
